Bring you up @promiseseeker

God doesn't just stand idly by when His people are mistreated or hurt. He watches. He sees. And He promises. He promises to "bring you up" to lift you, to carry you, to be with you and support you. To bring you up out of your misery. 

Our circumstances might not always change like the Israelites but God does not change and today still offers to "bring you up out of your misery" with peace that passes all understanding and joy that cannot be taken away. 

Jesus. He promised Jesus. And He delivered.

The sign @promiseseeker

"And God said, 'I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who sent you... you will worship God on this mountain." Exodus 3:12 NIV 

In His kindness, God not only promises His presence, but also a sign... Fast forward to 2 Corinthians 1:20-22 NIV 

“For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God. Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.”

We might not have a staff that turns into a snake, or a burning bush. But God's promise to us is Yes in Jesus and is sealed / signed with the Holy Spirit... And signs of God's faithfulness, signs of God's presence always leads to worship.

"Go back" is not always a bad thing. Society tells us that going backwards is demotion or defeat or failure but when it's God telling us to about turn it means our faith will grow, our future is bright because there is fulfilment of a promise.

Maybe the future is unknown. Maybe you know where God is calling you but you feel scared or wary. Maybe you feel exactly where God wants you right now. Maybe you have wandered away… Wherever you find yourself, God is watching over you… He is with you. He knows you. He sees you.

 

Don't be afraid of the next steps. God is watching over you WHEREVER you go!

Persevere @promiseseeker

“Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was childless. The Lord answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.”

Genesis 25:21 NIV

 

 

I wonder what Isaac's prayer sounded like. I imagine he knew of God's promises to his Dad. And knowing that he was the son through whom Abraham's offspring was going to number the stars might have felt like a rather hefty responsibility. So when it turned out he and his wife were unable to conceive what did that mean to Isaac?!

 

He rose up. He stood on the promise. He prayed "on behalf" of his wife (who I can imagine felt all kinds of shame and hopelessness). Isaac didn't give up on the promise. He persevered. He recalled what God had said and he went and talked to God about it.

 

And then he had his answer.

 

Don't give up on God's promises at the first hurdle. Talk to God about what's going on. Persevere in believing and trusting God for the promise even if circumstances tell you otherwise. God always keeps his promises…

Obey @promiseseeker

“The angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time and said, “I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.””

Genesis 22:15-18 NIV

Sometimes we have to play our part. We might not understand what God is asking of us, we might not enjoy our circumstances, we might not feel like forgiving or loving or going the extra mile… But sometimes we have to get on with it and obey. 

And when we obey sometimes that's the very thing that unlocks the promise. Notice that the promise has expanded too. Now not only will Abraham's offspring  match the stars and the sand in number but they will be successful and they in turn will be a blessing to the whole world. The promise has expanded and developed. Why? "Because you have obeyed me."

Obey. It's the obvious thing to do. It makes God happy. And you never know, your promise might get upgraded!

Sometimes we are so focused on getting our 'promise' from God that we take matters into our own hands. We think that we have to orchestrate things to bring about fulfilment of the promise. But actually, in steaming ahead and making it our responsibility to fulfil the promise we can end up creating chaos, or causing damage, or even delaying the very thing we were reaching for.

 

Abraham and Sarah didn't wait for God to fulfil the promise of children. They took the responsibility of creating offspring themselves and so Abraham had a child with Sarah's slave Hagar.

 

When we make mistakes or try to 'be God' in our own world, when we make a mess of things God says "Do not be so distressed…" God says that he will "also" make a nation out of Hagar's son because he is Abraham's also.

 

Also - in addition, on top of, as well… God doesn't take away from the promise but He extends it to cover our mistakes. He adds in, he gives the promise ALSO to those that don't technically deserve or qualify.

 

And that's grace. That's the same for us too. We ALSO get the promises.

Perfect timing @promiseseeker

Holding on to #promise20… After a series of set-backs, rejections and unexpected swerves to our journey it's good to be reminded that God comes through at "the very time" he's supposed to. 

We don't always have the answers, we don't always know what the future holds, we don't always get what we think we want… But God knows, He's in control and He keeps His promises. That'll do for today!

Gracious @promiseseeker

We've seen already how God keeps his promises in #promise18, how He remembers the individual. God graciously fulfils His promises. Despite Sarah laughing at the promise, God still goes ahead and fulfils it anyway. God always comes good on His word. He is gracious - merciful, forgiving, compassionate, kind and gentle towards us. God is gracious to us… "As He had said."

#promise18 "for the sake of ten, I will not destroy…"

 

God's heart is always for preservation, for life, for hope and renewal. And He doesn't forget His promises. Genesis 19:29 "he remembered…" this promise just like Genesis 8:1 when "God remembered…" In both these cases God remembers Abraham and He remembers Noah. Both of them by name. He remembers the individual and his heart is to preserve at the individual level. For the sake of ten.

 

God sees you and He remembers you. For your sake, not for his. He remembers and he preserves, He attends and considers the individual. And he saves, for the sake of ten, and for the sake of one.
