Really?!
This is another case for it being ok to ask 'why'? Why would God promise to kill? This goes against our understanding of a loving God. I'm not going to try and pretend I have the theological understanding to answer the 'why'... There are a couple of links at the bottom which are in depth and may help you understand God's actions here (the killing of the male Egyptian firstborns).
Suffice to say, on the surface we don't always understand. We don't have the bigger picture. We don't get to judge God's actions. He's God. Seeking out God's promises doesn't mean we'll always like or understand them.
Read the articles, do your own research... I still believe God was (and is) good, just, and love personified.
